Pregnancy and the birth of a newborn can be an exciting and joyful experience, but it can also bring many questions and uncertainty. Here are some things you can expect during pregnancy and after the birth of your newborn:
PREGNANCY
Pregnancy lasts about 40 weeks, or nine months, and is divided into three trimesters.
During pregnancy, you will have regular check-ups with your healthcare provider to monitor your health and your baby’s health.
You may experience various physical and emotional changes during pregnancy, such as weight gain, morning sickness, fatigue, and mood swings.
You may need to change your diet and lifestyle to ensure you and your baby’s health is good. This may include avoiding certain foods and activities and getting enough rest and exercise.
Childbirth, also known as labor and delivery, can be a physically and emotionally intense experience. Here are some things you might expect during childbirth:
EARLY LABOR: In the early stages of labor, you may experience contractions that start mild and become more intense over time. You may also experience other symptoms, such as back pain, diarrhea, and an urge to urinate. These early contractions help your cervix to dilate (open) and efface (thin out).
ACTIVE LABOR: As your work progresses, your contractions will become more frequent and intense. You may feel pressure in your pelvis and a strong urge to push. Your cervix will continue to dilate and efface.
TRANSITION: The transition phase is the most intense part of labor. Your contractions will be extreme and close together, and you may feel overwhelmed or like you can’t go on. It is important to remember that this phase is temporary and that you are almost at the end of your labor.
PUSHING & DELIVERY: When your cervix is dilated (10 cm), you will begin the pushing stage. Your healthcare provider will guide you through this process and help you find comfortable and practical positions for pushing. When your baby’s head is visible, your healthcare provider will guide the rest of the delivery.
AFTER DELIVERY: After your baby is born, you will continue to have contractions to help deliver the placenta. You may also experience bleeding and discomfort. Your healthcare provider will monitor you and your baby’s health and provide any necessary care.
It is important to remember that every childbirth experience is different, and you may not experience all of these stages or symptoms. Your healthcare provider will support you and help you through the process.
AFTER BIRTH
After giving birth, you will likely experience physical changes such as bleeding, swelling, and discomfort.
You may also experience emotional changes, such as feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or depressed. It is essential to take care of yourself and seek support if you need it.
You will need to care for your newborn, including feeding, changing diapers, and providing comfort. Newborns need to eat often, typically every 2-3 hours. They may breastfeed or take formula.
It is crucial to get enough rest and ask for help when you need it. It is also essential to take care of your own physical and emotional health to ensure that you can care for your newborn.
NEWBORN
A newborn’s appearance and behavior can vary widely. Some newborns are born with a full head of hair, while others are born bald. Some are calm and quiet, while others are more active and fussy.
Newborns need to eat often, typically every 2-3 hours. They may breastfeed or take formula.
Newborns have small stomachs and cannot eat very much at a time, so they need to eat frequently to get enough nutrition.
Newborns have frequent bowel movements and wet diapers.
Newborns have small heads and soft skulls, so it is vital to handle them gently and support their heads.
Newborns cannot regulate their body temperature well, so it is important to keep them warm and avoid overheating.
As a new parent, it can be overwhelming to care for a newborn. Don’t hesitate to ask for help or support from friends, family, or healthcare providers. It is also essential to take care of yourself and rest when possible.
